Gas or oil? How old is the furnace? If it's fairly new it should have an exciter not a pilot light. DO NOT light until you are sure there is no excess fuel in the burner.

There should, by law, be a sticker on the unit explaining the steps required. The pilot light would be behind a shield of light metal and is able to be manually lit with a match or in some instances a lighter. Can you not call a service tech?

well thanks for all your help. We ended up calling a repair man and its a good thing because the reason we couldnt see the pilot light was because there isnt one lol...there is some kind of egnighter(sp) switch coil thingy and it burnt out. The guy didnt have the part with him so he got the furnace started and left it running for a while to warn up thte house and left us with a few electric heaters and said he would be back in the morning.....so now the question is....how much is it going to cost?

Well he seems like a decent man to be getting it running and leaving you with heaters. Hopefully it will be a decent price and not much.
