Mooch, can you narrow your question down a little?
just in general, do religions make sense?
i sometimes feel they contradict itself alot
for example they say revenge isnt good, yet in the Bible it says somewhere eye for an eye... im sure other religions contradict as well
Moochie, that one is a typical example.
If you study the bible passages in question, you'll find that it's NOT a justification for revenge at all, but a direction to the jewish people NOT to take revenge beyond what is fair.
If you lost an eye to an attacker, it was ONLY proper to take that eye from him, not (as the usual human tendency is) to get back MORE.
So it's not contradictory at all.
AH HAHAHAHA
It's either a justification for revenge or it isn't. In the example you are providing it justifies revenge as long as you don't' take it to far. So it is a justification for revenge.
Wouldn't the proper apologetic response be that an eye for an eye is mosaic law and jesus instead taught not to seek an eye for an eye but instead turn and offer the other cheek.
One can be a true believer in anything: psychic ability, Christianity or, as Bertrand Russell classically suggested (with irony), in the fact there is a teapot orbiting the earth. I could believe any of those things with total conviction. But my conviction doesn't make them true. Indeed, it is something of an insult to the very truth I might hold dear to say that something is true just because I believe it is. ~Derren Brown
Do you believe in law, NH??
If so, what I said is perfectly valid.
Justice is what it is all about, not revenge.
OK
Although I'm just going by what you stated... "but a direction to the jewish people NOT to take revenge beyond what is fair.
I did not say it wasn't about justice. In fact, I said it was from mosaic law, which is a form of justice. You were the one that brought up revenge, not I.

Actually revenge means equal recompense, doesn't it? After all, why does God say, "Vengeance is mine, I will repay..?"
The reason are free from demanding recompense is not because the offender is off the hook. It is because God will take care of vindicating the offended one.
The 10 Commandments are common sense, you dont need to follow a religion to practice them.
But the first one says to love God with all your heart. What does that look like? How does one do that without being religious?
The second one forbids us from having any idols. What do idols look like in North America?
That's kind of silly. There are many who are famous and popular, that doesn't make them demons. There's nothing wrong with being a fan of somebody. I'm sure you're a big fan of someone or some band. Just because you idolize someone, does that really make that person a demon? Don't think so... Now if someone actually worships a movie star or rock star, then the worshiper has problem and it still doesn't make the famous person a demon.
That's easy, just watch american idol and you have your answer
