Default A New Pet Peeve RE: Credit Cards and Retailers

Okay, here is my vent for the city this morning.

On the back of my credit cards, in the signature panel, I have written on it to check my ID, as I do not wish to have my cards stolen/used without my permission.

I am NEVER asked for the id.

I work with credit cards everyday at my employer, and when I see one with check id, I ask the customer. It amazes me that signatures are never compared anymore.

    Do your employees even care?

Anyway, maybe the business owners/managers can have a chat with their employees today about this customer service. It may seem silly, but I go to great lengths to take care of my business, and would appreciate the extra effort.

(Add... people need to start signing their cards too. I see many that do not do this... which results in a lecture from me. )

I ask for ID when checking credit cards all the time and most people laugh at me and ask me if i'm serious. If the name on the card does not match the ID then i refuse the card and i have been screamed and yelled at for that too...maybe employees are just tired of getting screamed at.

I always check Credit Cards, it's amazing the crap people try to pull. I remember a man came in with his "wife's" card, and I said very politely "Sir, I can't accept this, your name isn't even on the card" and he proceeded to say he and his wife had a joint credit card account. I explained to him that if that were the case that he should have his own card with his name on it and I wouldn't be able accept the credit card until he brought me that card. Man, did I ever get yelled at. It's even worse when teens come in with their parent's cards and expect to be able to use it. When I would refuse those they would go grab their parent's who were in another store in the mall and then they would come yell at me.

There's just no winning when in customer service.

On another side of that coin, even though I always checked cards, my co-workers never did, which led to a stolen card being used at my store. Not fun.

It is said in the automotive business one loses 15 percent of one's customers every year.

So losing one for that reason is not a big deal.

But one question might be, how can you use someone elses card? Picture a newlywed couple being handed dad's credit card for the honeymoon, and then discovering, a thousand miles from home, they can't use it.

I can understand that being true and a horrible situation to be in, however, what ever happened to the concept that only the person with the name on the card is allowed to use the card?

If that were the case, order another card with your daughter's/son's name on it so they can use it and get it back when the honeymoon is over if you're that trusting of your sibling to be responsible enough.

Just yesterday my son presented his visa in a store in the US to pay for his purchase and even with the new technology pin # card he was asked to provide ID. I wasnt' asked nor did the clerk even ask to see my card, but he had to provide ID, of course he had it and it is his own visa card, I was impressed and told the clerk that I thought it was the "right thing"

Normally I have no problems with credit cards and have signed mine. In June, I took the kids to GWL and had put reservations on my husbands cc. He ended up not being able to make it, so I called the lodge and explained to them what happened. They said it would be alright since he was my husband, but I had to bring his card with me. I was a bit suprised as the cards were not joint. While down there I was shopping at the Traverse Mall and ended up giving them my husband's card instead of mine. She ended up putting the purchase through and handed it back. I realized my mistake and told her that it wasn't my card, but my husbands. She asked the manager what to do and the manager just told me to forge his signature. I was quite suprised over that.

I have had a credit card for about 10 years now, and can count on one hand how many times a cashier has even held on to my card long enough to even see if the signature I put on the paper matching what's on my card. I have NEVER been asked for ID.

well I know you know...you're a smart girl lol

I have no idea if they use/have it over there though.

I almost NEVER use my cc in person. I only ever use it to buy online so when I had occaission to use it a couple weeks ago at the gas station (forgot my debit card..d'oh!), I was all confused when I had to sign something...LOL!

I grabbed my card and started walking out and the girl's yelling at me "WAIT YOU HAVE TO SIGN THIS!"

Yep.. hubby has the same thing on his card and a local store advised him that they can no longer accept a CC without a signature. Was startled over that. Things are changing. You used to be able to use your husband's card without hassle.. When I was in college my DAD gave me his credit card to buy the books for the semester and didn't have a hard time with that either. Now you can't do any... good thing for his / hers LOL

you steal my truck, you get my wallet & cheques!

anyways, when I walk in a store, i bring in just the credit card or debit card that i need.
ask me for ident & i gotta go to the truck & while i'm there...i'd probably just keep on going!

I dont think its the retailers responsibility to determine whether a card is stolen or not. I will agree that if a woman named Dianne is trying to use a card that has Mark Smith on it, then its obvious. If someone came to me with a credit card withg the name Mark Smith and the person handing me the card is a male in his 30's, I wouldnt question the card. Its the cardholder's responsibiliy to ensure the integrity of their cards is not comprimised. Now if a 10 year old kid hands me a credit card, then we have issues.

The scotia bank informed hubby and I in a letter, that by the middle of Jan 2009 they will mail us a Visa Card with a pin # and we will use it the same as a credit card. We will not have to sign it anymore. That comes right from Scotiabank Visa Center.I called and asked. lol

I do not sign my credit cards. Instead I write "Please ask for photo ID". I can count on the fingers of one hand how many times I was asked to show ID. A lot of retailers don't even flip the card over to check for a signature. They just scan it and hand it back. Lots of security there!
