    Default World Juniors

Being held in Ottawa this year, the World Juniors are on the big stage.
With only 4 returning from last years Gold Medal Team and 8 players playing pro, this year as I have said, will test the Canadian talent pool.
Still favored, the Canadian kids beat Sweden, another early favorite, 4-2.
I think they are well on their way to being the team they need to be to defend the Gold.
There is some amazing talent, we might not have seen, had everyone returned that could.
This is the best hockey you'll see, until playoffs, IMO, so.......
Tune in to TSN and cheer the boys on

Cody Hodgson had a goal and two assists for the second straight game Sunday as Canada beat Finland 7-3 in an exhibition tuneup for the tournament.

"The conventional wisdom is that Canadian teams are at a disadvantage when the tournament is played in Europe: Road games on Olympic-sized rinks with five or six-hour time changes (or worse for the kids from B.C.) I don't buy it completely. The Canadian teams that lost to the Russians in Winnipeg and Halifax felt incredible pressure. The Russians, particularly in Halifax, played fast and loose and the Canadian teams were as tight as frog skin. A lot of pundits are touting Sweden or even Russia to win this tournament and the U.S. figures to be stronger than usual (with a team that leans heavily on CHL talent). That might be an accurate read of the talent in this tournament ... and it might also take a bit of the weight of the Worlds of the Canadian teens' shoulders."

Pressure...lots of pressure. I think it is actually a disadvantage for Canada when they play at home. Sure, there is pressure overall, but at home in Canada the players will not be able to escape it for one second. The weight of a country desperately wanting to believe its days of hockey supremacy are not over is a mighty heavy burden for these young kids.

Canada will be a favorite. But make no mistake about it: as we speak, Don Cherry is tucking away in his suit pocket a list of excuses to make should Canada fold under pressure.

    Canada 8 - Czech Republic 1

No real test here after a slow start, scored seven times in the final 40 minutes and out shoot the Czechs 37-22.

    On an interesting note:
Players will wear a LB sticker on their helmets in the opening game to pay tribute to Luc Bourdon.

I see Hockey Canada teamed up with the IIHF to ensure Canada wouldn't get embarrassed today.

Kazakhstan plays last night, and then plays less than twenty hours later?? Is this a Pee Wee tournament??

And, of course, Hockey Canada made sure when Canada plays the U.S. it as after Canada has a day's rest, and the U.S. plays the night before.

Maybe, just maybe, someday Canada will play fair.

    But don't hold your breath.

Well, in the team's defense, this is the type of tournament where goals scored play an important part in the playoff seeding. But, it is a bit ridiculous to go past ten.

And I got sick listening to Pierre McGuire talking about how "classy" Canada was in running up the score on Kazakhstan. Like anyone can infer class on kicking an opponent in the face when they are down.

If it was Russia or the U.S. running the score on a lesser opponent, you'd hear no end to how un-classy and poor sportsmanship it was from McGuire and Cherry...bunch of xenophobic blowhards.

Its a no win situation for the teams (no matter where they are from), if they run up the score they get bad mouthed but if they don't and they miss out in the end by a goal or two the same ones will be bad mouthing them for not scoring more when you could have. I agree with the idea that there should be a maximum number per game where they'd stop counting, the number I heard was 5. That would be OK as it affects everyone the same.

Your right Grumpy its a no win situation. If they run up the score they get bad mouthed, if they don't play to win they'd be bad mouthed too.

I think 15 - 0 is a bit of an embarrassment but what are they (the boys) to do?

OK.......wait a minute, ever heard of the tie breaker rule?
As much as it may seem like unsportsmanlike, it is not.
You have to avoid being tied in the standings, after the games are played.
Goal difference is huge in tournament play, so.....

you know we heard the same thing about the lady's hockey team after the last Olympics where they ran up the scores and every"expert" who could crawl out from under their rock was up in arms till the teams that got beat told them to shut up about it as it is worse for a team to play down to the other's level than to run up the score as how are they going to see what needs to be worked on if the good teams take it easy on them. It will be interesting to see what the score will be between the US and Kazakhstan.
