when people/things die where does the spirit/soul go? Does the spirit ascend and the body stays and decays?

I respect the bible witness by the apostles, who were in a position to know. They taught us that the soul, submitted to God, will spend eternity with Him.

I personally just can't accept that this awareness I experience will end when my body stops.

Is death a scary proposition to you, Keebler?
To me, the process of dying, (possible pain, loss of dignity, mental faculty, etc) is more of a concern than death itself.

He's more than welcome to go find his 70 virgins right now. In fact, the next time he goes out, I'll help him pack for his trip. His stuff will be on the back porch if anyone would like to help him move.

The earliest mention I can locate of the word soul came in the eighth century(no mention BC or AD) from old Germanic and means 'bound to the earth'. It having something to do with the burying of the body so the ghost couldn't roam. The word may have some ties with the sea as well as some believed that the souls rested on the bottom of the ocean. Again, contained and unable to roam. If this is the case where do we get our rendition of the word soul? How was it given worth, only through the Bible, I assume.

Also it seems as though with all the posts that everyone accepts the fact we have a soul. I'm not soul d. Sorry, couldn't resist. If you all agree we have a soul then does it not follow that the rest of the Bible is right as well?

In this metaphysical area, it is hard to have a discussion when people demand empirical evidence. So that discourages posters, I would imagine.

Add to that the typical mockery that follows talk about life after death, and voila.. you meet with silence.

You know those nights when you just can't sleep? I had one last night and it revolved around my BC/AD comment. If I were to stop and think it would need be BC as AD the Bible had come to fruition and therefore the word soul would be customary, sorry.

Blue, that was not a prove me wrong statement, it was a steer me in the right direction statement, question, whatever. I googled my heart out and thats all I got.

Feel free to jump in as I won't laugh, I haven't the room nor the inclination.

    Some input.

    SOUL
A word with two distinct meanings in the Bible:
    1. That which makes a human or animal body alive. This usage of the word soul refers to life in the physical body. The best example of this usage are those passages in the New Testament in which the Greek word for soul is translated as life. "For whoever desires to save his life [soul] will lose it," Jesus declared, "but whoever loses his life [soul] for My sake and the gospel's will save it. For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?" <Mark 8:36-37>.
This idea is also present in the Old Testament. For example, the soul of a dying person departed at death <Gen. 35:18>. The prophet Elijah brought a child back to life by stretching himself upon the child three times and praying that God would let the child's soul come back into him <1 Kin. 17:19-23>.
    2. The word soul also refers to the inner life of man, the seat of his emotions, and the center of human personality. The first use of the word soul in the Old Testament expresses this meaning: "And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being (soul)" <Gen. 2:7>. This means more than being given physical life; the biblical writer declares that man became a "living soul," or a person, a human being, one distinct from all other animals.
The soul is described as the seat of many emotions and desires: the desire for food <Deut. 12:20-21>, love <Song 1:7>, longing for God <Ps. 63:1>, rejoicing <Ps. 86:4>, knowing <Ps. 139:14>, and memory <Lam. 3:20>.
In the New Testament, Jesus spoke of his soul as being "exceedingly sorrowful" <Matt. 26:38>. Mary, the mother of Jesus, proclaimed that her soul "magnifies the Lord" <Luke 1:46>. John prayed that Gaius would "prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers" <3 John 2>.

Count me as another one who is not afraid of death but is concerned about the process of dying. Seen too many not nice deaths in my lifetime. My ideal would be quick but with enough time to say my goodbyes, pain non-existent or well-controlled, not feel like I'm drowning.

There is no doubt in my mind that SOMETHING survives the death of the physical body.Call it soul, call it spirit, call it energy, call it consciousness,whatever......but I firmly believe in another plain of existence after this one.

I am not afraid of death or dying. I would like to have a quick easy death. I do not believe in keeping someone alive because medical science can. We must accept that sometimes letting go or letting nature take her course is the best.
For my children, loved ones I want them to have long lives and easy deaths. i have seen easy deaths and have seen horrendous deaths.

Karen Annie, from your nursing experience, would you say that fear of death sometimes seems to be a physical response? In other words, no matter how much a person SAYS he is not afraid, the instinct to live and the energy expended sometimes to go on living is an autonomous physical response, even after the mind is gone, and can still look very much like fear?

The word soul from the old Gemanic also was atributed to trees and animals and such. They felt that anytimg alive would have a soul, not only man.

The bible attributes soul only to man and from Barry's Genesis quote, we ARE souls, we don't HAVE souls.

    That's quite a distinction.
