I have Bells Palsy, had it since 2003. I was diagnosed @ the hospital and given Steroids immediately but nothing for pain. But when the PAIN hit, OMG..I thought I would die. I ended up taking 600mgs of Ibuprofen(have to get a prescription& Tylenol# 3) and had a Magic Bag that I'd heat in the microwave and lie on it. My pain was right behind my right ear, on the boney part.
It goes away after a few days but geeez, I would of preferred to give labour.
Dont know if the hospital gave you eye drops to lubricate your eye, cause you gotta tape it shut, obviously it won't close by itself if that muscle is paralysed.

The numbness or paralysis gradually goes away - mine has taken 4 yrs and I still have residual that affects my left eye and left corner of mouth.
If you get treatment right away, Steroids & Acupuncture - your chances of recovery are better.
I believe I got Bells Palsy from a chiropractor and is why mine has not receded.

Best of luck to you, if you have any questions just ask.

I've had Bells Palsy since about 1999. I was also diagnosed at the hospital, but then, they didn't know ANYTHING about it. So, thus I was not prescribed anything. I also get the pain in behind my ear, its TERRIBLE. OMG! Not the worst pain.. But, close to it! The paralysis is making me mad, because I can't go out like this!! I'm hoping it will go away soon!!
And, No, the hospital did NOT give me eye drops. I asked, they said nothing. I 'didn't need them.' I might just go out and buy some. My eye, ALMOST closes. Not completly. like an 8th of an inch open.

My eye, is still droopy from when i first got diagnosed. It caused me to have the Lazy Eye.
I was also looking it up, and I'm wondering if you can just buy muscle relaxers ANYWHERE? Because all the sites I've looked on, thats what they recommend.
I got Bells Palsy from a break out of Herpes in the mouth.

Oh, by the way, do you know of any 'exercises' that you can do to help with the numbness or to help it get better? Or anyone for that matter?

Thanks!

Did you get it again? The only time mine acts up is when its cold or when I'm tired, I find that my eyes tears alot. Yeah you can get the lubrication drops @ a drug store, just ask the pharmacist to help you. I had to actually put the drops on, put a patch over my eye and tape it closed cause I couldn't sleep plus your eyeball drys out which can lead to infections. As for pain, the only time it hurts is when I am over-tired, not as bad as when I first got it and loud pitches of sound, live band, anything close to the ear drum causes a sharp pain behind my eardrum. I think I'll have mine for the rest of my life, I believe that when I went to see the chiropractor, he manipulated my neck ( cracked it on both sides) and by 6pm or so that evening, I noticed that I couldn't close my eye - that my mouth wasn't working properly and so on. I went to the hospital thinking I was having a stroke and then diagnosed me, gave me some Prednisone (steroid)& anti-viral stuff. They told me it was because of stress and that the chiropractor incident was "pure coincidence".

Here is an excellent site for resources. I did get accupuncture temporarily but it's expensive but it DID work. I got alot of muscle control back, I put heat on it and massage my face when it hurts.

Yeah, I got it REALLY bad again. Like, I got it when I was first diagnosed. I first got it from Herpes in the mouth, basically just a bad break out of cold sores, inside and outside of my mouth.
Today, I can't move the affected side, AT ALL! Yesterday, I could move it a bit. But today, not at all.
And then this time, I dont know WHAT triggered it. But the pain in the back of my ear was soo bad. so I went to the hospital again this morning, and thank god the DR gave me some Tylenol 3, ear drops, eye drops, and polysporn<sp?>. I took a T3 and my ear doesn't hurt that much anymore. The eye drops help MEGA tonnes!
And, I haven't done the ear drops yet.. She checked my ear, and I have all those blisters inside, so thats where the pain is coming from!!
And, yeah I'm also on the Prednisone. And the anti-viral stuff!

Yikes, I do not ever want to relive that pain again, so sorry for you. Its like getting hit with a sledge hammer behind the ear on the boney part. I'm glad you got what you need, the hospital told me that my Bells' was from a virus attacking the nerve behind my ear - which I think is complete B.S cause in the same breath she said, "Actually we don't really know what causes it, cause pregnant women wake up with it, people get it all the time".
I was told it was from not protecting my face in the cold, from sleeping with the fan on, from not taking vitamins, for working shift work, for not resting, for always being on the go, taking on too much blah blah blah. I don't believe any of it, I think my chiropractor damaged the nerves in my neck beyond repair and they won't let me see the xray from the hospital that nite. LOL!

Oh, I know. I'm so glad I got medicine.
It is exactly like getting hit with a hammer!!
I wouldn't believe what they said. That doesn't seem right. Stress DOESN'T cause it. I'm sure it could affect it, but would not cause it. Something has to damage/attack the nerves in order for Bell's Palsy to happen. Pregnant women would wake up with it, because they are prone to getting infections, and sick. It would make sense. Yeah, too bad you couldn't see those x-rays, and then SUE! Think of the money you would get! :P
Oh yeah, doctors protect doctors so much!! Unbelievable!

i was reading on the internet that bell's palsy is also from lyme disease?
well it does sound like a nerve thing...
my hubby's cousin has it, she's had it forever, her mouth is crooked, and it never goes away, mind you, she was dx with diabetes too, diabetes affects nerves doesnt it?
i think my uncle was hospitalized with it twice, this is in europe, he was told it was cold air....he's also diabetic...im seeing a trend here!

anyway sage, u can call the hospital anytime and ask for ur xrays just tell them it's to show another dr
i had a chest xray once, and it also showed my scoliosis and i wanted dr shamess to check out the spine and i just called the hospital and told them i wanted the doc to check out my spine in the xray and they gave it to me....
i also believe the chiro could have caused the problem too...

I was told my Bell's Palsy was from a million things, none of which would have applied to me. I was pregnant, it was 1996 and I lived in a VERY small town. The one doctor kept insisting I must have had whiplash. :| Pain medicine has never worked for me because I never know when the pain will hit, or when it will stop. no, its not a form of lyme disease, back in the day, thats what they thought it might have been..
it is defintly a nerve thing..
yeah, her mouth must have been really affected by it,
but if you do the excersices and take the medicine they give you etc, it will help prevent the muscles strength decreasing from happening.
yes,it is more common in people with diabetes.

Causes

The exact causes of Bell's palsy are unknown. However, it is thought that viral infection of the facial nerve is the most likely cause. Herpes simplex - the virus responsible for cold sores - may lie inactive (dormant) at the root of the facial nerve, causing swelling when it reactivates ("wakes up"). Other viral illnesses such as herpes zoster (the virus responsible for chickenpox and shingles) may also trigger Bell's palsy. Having diabetes seems to increase the risk.

Yeah I think mine is permanent, although I don't talk like Jean Chretien.
I do wear glasses, have worn them since childhood, I don't know...that is interesting. My glasses don't bother me though. When I first got Bell's, it was horrible - I look at ol' pictures of when I had a full smile, geez ...makes me sad sometimes. Now my smile is crooked, not too bad but my friends & family are used to it.
Bell's is quite common, I've ran into so many people these last few years who approach me and wonder how long I've it and so on.
Only a person with Bell's can understand the vanity of not have full use of your face, how it can skew your self esteem.
It doesn't bother me now, but 3 years ago, I would cover my mouth when I smiled. I don't care anymore, life is too short to be hung up on if my smile is crooked!! lol

Do you have a lazy eye at all?
Do you have any of the symptoms of Bells Palsy?
My bell's isn't permanent... I hope!
I really hope it starts clearing up soon!
I really don't want it to be permanent!

Thats how I am right now. I haven't went out, except to the hospital. And anytime I'd talk, I'd cover my mouth. Or when I was giggling..Or anything.. I hate it. I couldn't even order the pizza on the phone.. I had to get someone else to!
That makes me so..angry!

LOL! Dribbling, omg..I remember dribbling .....4 yrs ago. Drinking Timmy's was a challenge at that time.
Mouth doesn't sag, but it is not as strong as the other side.
Had to learn how to pronunciate my words again.
Tearing of the eye constantly especially when I'm tired(like right now)....one eye is slightly different than the other.
VERY sharp sounds hurt like heck!
You would never know I have Bell's, except for my eye.

Its sort of the same symptoms as a stroke - but without the body being affected.

Thats awesome that you wouldn't be able to tell, w/o your eye!
Yeah, alot of people notice my lazy eye. Espescially when I'm tired. Thats how everyone knows if I'm tired. And thats just what I tell them. Its lazy because of Bell's Palsy.
I can go to concerts and all that jazz without hurting my ear.
BUT, my eye waters like heck when I'm tired also! Like, waters like Mad, like I'm crying.
And dribbling.. OMG. I really knew my Bell's was acting up, when I went to brush my teeth in the morning. And, I go to spit..PFFT! YEAH RIGHT! LMAO! All over my chin! Yummy!
Just right now the sound is hurting my ear. Every little bump in the road, I could hear the tires hitting it. The fan at the hospital, no one else could hear the screeching of the fan..but I could! :|

Okay, so today.. face isn't any better.
but last night the muscle in my cheek was going crazy!!
I dont know if thats good or bad, or just whatever!
Also, now, the left half up my upper lip like closer to the top near my nose, keeps twitching. I hope this means my facial muscles want to start moving again..
Pain in my ear is okay with T3.. still sore, loud noises hurt it. But I can deal with it. I've been putting ear drops in, and it really helps. (:
