Thread: Any bug bite experts?

  1. #1

    Default Any bug bite experts?

My daughter got three huge bug bites yesterday up at Hiawatha/ Mockingbird.
They have a pretty big *bite* mark in the center (a hole with blood) and then it is red around the mark about half an inch around. BUT the strange thing is the bite is flat....not raised like most of the bites I am used to.

What type of bite is this?

Tick bites, especially deer tick bites, are often associated with Lyme disease. Although this is true, they also transmit Rocky Mountain spotted fever, tularemia, Colorado tick fever, and ehrlichiosis. In United States, deer ticks are the ones that transmit Lyme disease in most cases.

It is a popular myth that ticks jump around until they find a host. This is not true. They attach by physical contact, and move up and down up to a few hours until they find a site to attach to.

Once they attach, they feed on the host's blood. This is where it get dangerous. Bacteria that deer ticks are sometimes infected with, can be transmitted to the host.

Once they are done eating, they fall off and are ready to mate.

It could also be a spider bite...at least I was told if you have three bites it's usually a spider. I would call the nurses hot line and maybe ask them.

Could be black fly, could be deer or horse fly, but if the last two, she likely would have known it was on her at the time because they are big. My daughter got one just as you describe yesterday, high on the cheek bone, by her eye. It is typical of how she reacts to black flies. She was at Queen Elizabeth field for the track meet. My husband was out late yesterday afternoon, in the Second Line area, and he said the black flies were definitely out.

    I wouldn't sweat it.

Only problem is, you won't find one North of Georgia. They are native to the Southern US and Gulf of Mexico.

It's probably a mosquito bite, sometimes they are flat but odd shaped with a red dot of blood in the center. Could be a spider bite though. And yes, we have no brown recluse spiders around here! Spiders in our area are not deadly. If you venture more east or west though I believe there are widow spiders, but not in the sault
