With all the job losses(Algoma Steel from 12,000 to 5,000) I'm surprised it's not more! Plus all the other cut backs in this city.
I think we're lucky we still have as many as we do.
With all the new things opening I'd have to say we're on an upswing.

Well in a few weeks it will be 75 998 as my daughter and I are moving. I wasn't hired here for work and of course the position I'm well qualified was advertised a few weeks ago...after I was NOT hired. Oh well!! There loss....Belleville's gain. They offered me a job 1 1/2 days after my interview. Frustrating as now I have to sell my house and move somewhere I didn't want to go and not be able to fulfill my goal...which was to provide a much needed and much lacking service to the north...but I have a family to consider as well. Damn Soo...ok..enough of my rant!hehe

BUT...when you talk about people that left the Soo years ago....they were not looking for better jobs...
I know a hellava lot of people that left because of their miserable upbringing......People that just had to get away.

Then they came back for a high school reunion and asked the rest of us how we could stand living here. They didn't understand that the rest of us stayed because we liked it.

According to current statistics, you'll probably do this more than 6 or 7 times before you retire.
It's not the Sault's fault, it's due to economic/population shifts.
The economies fluid and therefore so is the labour pool.

some leave for many reasons, that is true.

id love to be back in the Sault for the cost of living aspect but , job wise, the money is better out here.

i could quit or get fired & have another job tomorrow &, if i went home, id be back in the bars every night because there ain't much to do.

I have been turning down jobs cuz i want certain things offered.

there is more opportunity out of the Sault & there is a hell of a lot more to do out here than back there....for me & thats my opinion of course.

where am i gonna make $20 + in the sault?

Steel plant aint hiring unless i got a trade & then again id make more money out here with that said trade.

this is just my story.
i'm mad at myself that i wasted so many years at nucomm & the purple lantern & should have left sooner.

i think most ppl that leave the sault, still love to be back there but its financial suicide.

Well I expect to have to move a few more times now that I accepted a position in Belleville. I doubt I would have gone too far if I could have stayed here, cause I love N.Ont.and this is where I wanted to be. Unfortunately I have to disagree..it is the Saults fault...actually a specific school boards fault. They knew a specific person was retiring in my field and still choose not to hire me even as a supply and yet within 3 weeks time the job that I'm qualified (well qualified I might add) is posted. They cried because there is a shortage of people qualified in my field, yet when the had to opportunity to hire me even just to have me on hand in case (which of course they did need) they didn't. And now I'm going elsewhere. And they will soon be stuck again crying for people with my qualifications and having to go without. It just p*sses me off that I went the extra mile to help provide a service that is lacking in the North, yet when I'm hoping and willing to stay here and work...I'm told...Thank you but no thanks. Just frustrating!

Added to say: Barney - I just seen an add St. Mary's are hiring quite a few people right now...mostly trademen and engineers I believe!

Same thing happened to me more than 10 years ago. Same thing happened to my friends more than 20 years ago.
Pay your dues and then come back. That's what we all did.

Doesn't always work out that way though. I was promise a job here so I moved back. Was here 4 months, change of government and I was gone. Friend was under the same impression. Luckily he found out before he moved his family back for Victoria Island.

Most of my friends have moved back here though(graduated HS 1984)one still waiting.
All are now successful and raising their kids in their home town.
