    Default "High-end" AGP card

I'm thinking about getting a decent AGP card that can handle games like Far Cry and FEAR, and hopefully does at least SM3.0.

If you have anything let me know.

    No doubt they did! lol
My wife was thinking about getting into PC gaming so I built her a system to start out with some classic (but good) games. I've even been playing some Far Cry on it myself! But best of all it's a dirt cheap rig! It's a socket A system with an Athlon XP 3200+, 1GB of DDR400, a WD Raptor 150GB drive, and a ridiculously overclocked Radeon 9550 256mb card. It's doing the job decently, but some more grunt on the video end would be nice.

    Your in luck....

Good old 3850. Reasonbly powered for a reasonable price.

P.S. - your going to need a molex to 8pin pciE connector for some odd reason

Likely because the AGP slot can't supply as much juice as a PCIe slot, so it needs more then it could get from a 6 pin.

I'm not sure I want to get anything new though. I don't know if she'll get into it enough to make it worth while. However if it came down it, the 4670 AGP might be alright too. But I was hoping someone would have an old X1950pro, or an X1600pro even..... or even a good nvidia card if the price is right! lol

I got a 9800XT from a friend on over the weekend which would have been excellent for her but it does nothing but artifact like crazy. Even sitting at the desktop..... so it's junk.

Don't give up completely on the 9800.
I have a 9800 pro that was doing the same thing, and the problem was the heatsink absolutely sucked. I purchased a heatsink/fan at NCIX http://ncix.com/products/index.php?m...8355&vpn=VC-RE and it solved my problem. It can even plug into your onboard fan connector on your motherboard for monitoring purposes.

Funny you say that! My friend had a 9800pro 128mb card also so we swapped it out for that. It's running like a champ! My wife is good to go, for now......... haha

Ya almost every single 9800 series card I have owned or have seen others own have died pretty much. Mainly due to the piss poor coolers that were put on it stock, and aftermarket ones didnt do much better to help as those were the first real powerhouse cards out.

It's all housed in my old CM Stacker with a 120mm side fan huffing right on it so it should be ok for now. I cleaned the gpu and cooler and put some MX2 on her but I'm looking for an el-cheapo aftermarket unit to slap on it in the mean time.

BTW....... damn Far Cry looks good on that old system!!!!

Ever consider parting with that raptor for a 500gb drive and a couple of bucks? I think im going to end up picking up another raptor off HWC and would love a nice raid array.
