    Default Yesterday's Demonstration?

    http://www.sootoday.com/content/news...ryNumber=43625

I don't understand something about yesterday's demonstration on the bridge. The article said that customs tried to make an elder pay duty. I thought that natives were exempt from paying duty, and that even if the HST goes through, that it's not being implemented until next summer. So how is it that this person was being required to pay? Do natives pay duty? I'm confused.

Also, was the demonstration planned for after the shopping trip, or was it just in response to them trying to make this person pay duty? Anyone know anything?

They will do anything to protest, most of them dont work, they sit at home and wait for their cheques to come in.

Of course this was planned ... they had a CTV newsteam to film it. Seriously, do these ppl just wake up in the morning and plan these stupid things ???

Speaking of which is pay day not today?

K, well there's 3000 posts on the other thread, and most of them are nonsense having nothing to do with the thread. So can anyone just answer my questions without me having to read the other thread for an hour?

I heard they wanted to check what they had. In my view the border officers, can search anyone coming into Canada regardless of race, sex, age etc. It is a case of home land security.....natives like any other race can be bought off. What is stopping one native from taking a bunch of money from a terrorist organization and bringing a weapon into Canada to be used on our soil? The natives have to get with the times....the World is a different place and they live in a western country so they are a target of terrorism like the rest of us. They have to understand that our countries security comes first...I think the fact that they can stop traffic on a border crossing is a security risk and officers should be able to remove that risk...

Chief Sayers should take a drive through a US Native Reserve and quickly learn how well off they are here in the Sault area.

Their cheques come from treaty payments as part settlement for letting us use their land.

    who made this their land?

    Who owns Canada?
Canada is not owned it is a free country.

Although Canada was explored by the British and French in the late fifteenth century, the Vikings had a short lived settlement in about 1000 A.D., so one could say that the Vikings first discovered Canada. Look here for more information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canada#...n_colonization

It's a legal agreement between Canada and the First Nations. That's why they get paid. Rant all you like about who owns what. They get paid out of our tax dollars and they don't have to pay our taxes. That's the agreement.

And, if you want to give me a history lesson feel free - just don't leave out the part about the First Nations people meeting Eric the Red on the shore when he got here

Yep, can't remember the exact details but they found a centuries old mead hall (a place to celebrate & drink) in the great north among some other things, I agree ... Indians (Natives) were not the first & only ones here. Guess we should be paying the old Norse/Viking tribes. (Norway, Sweden, Finland etc)

"Even though popular history credits Erik as the first person to find Greenland, earlier Norsemen both discovered and tried to settle it before him."

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erik_the_Red

Gunnbjörn Ulfsson is credited with the first find and then Snaebjörn Galti after him.

I'm just shaking my head here. No, the vikings were not here before the native people. The vikings were the first Europeans here, that's all. The native people beat them by 20 or 30 thousand years at least.

I think the "mead hall" you're talking about is this:

You might want to pay particular attention to the mention of 'Skraelings' as you read.
