yes, i took it for awhile, it never worked at all for me. good luck getting it here in the soo to help with weight loss though. i had to get a specialist from toronto to rx it for me. in the soo it was strictly for patients with diabetes. i have heard that it works for others though, i guess it just depends on individual traits. i read all about it on a pcos boars and saw the specialist in toronto for pcos.

My Grandma takes it... it seems to work just fine for her diabetes... as far as weight loss, I don't know, she's already a healthy weight, not sure why she would be on it if it is effective in loosing weight...

I have pcos and for years have been trying with no success to loose the weight. My doc gave me an rx today. I have been eating extreamly healthy, whole grain wild rice, chicken, whole wheat bread home made soups and stuff like that going to the gym working my butt off only to find that it is not getting worked off. I pick up the meds tomorrow and start. Hopefully with my balanced diet and exercise I can finally get some weight off.

it does help, the idea is, it regulates(or helps with diet changes) to regulate your sugar levels so you don't get the drop in blood sugar that causes people to over eat, like I said it helps...it is not a miracle drug.

p.s. Good Luck and I do hope it works, all the best to you(and Merry Christmas)

Dr beduhn. We have tried other stuff to help but it wasn't helping. This is like the last hope thing. I am not expecting miracles but I hope it helps. It is very frustrating to work your ass off only to not see any change at all.

i wish i could remember the site i went to a board for pcos. i found so much support there. i remember some saying alpha liopoic (sp) acid maybe helped. i still take that because its good for you. basicially the only thing that worked for me was weight loss surgery.

now, the pcos specialist in toronto said i wasnt a true pcos. i had most of the symptoms or side effects, but i didnt have the facial hair. i have the baldness! unfortunatly. he said that the infeterility and facial hair were the main things, and also that string of pearls type of cysts. i have big honkin coconut sized cysts, but again, the typical one is the string of pearls.

when you have some time, just search for discussion boards for pcos sufferers till you find one that you like. i really connected with some wonderful people and it helped me understand what was going on.

i know about trying so hard. joining a gym and giving it my all 5 days a week, perfect food plan and following it. feeling better, but when you see that you havent lost an inch or a pound after a few months it is so discouraging. then i would fall of the wagon for awhile and try it all again.

the surgery not only makes your stomach smaller and bypasses some intestine, but it changes your hormones and everything. i was so worried that even with the surgery i would not be able to loose weight, but i did. anyway, dont get me wrong, im not pushing it, im just saying it was the only thing for me.

Yes I have the string of pearl type cysts and all the other lovely symptoms that go along with pcos. I have had a few cysts the size of oranges burst on me and put me in the hosptal for a few days. With the way my hormones are they are suprised that I actually got pregnant and held onto it. The doctos kept telling me to prepair to lose the baby because of the drugs i was taking for hormones.

My MIL takes it, she's type 2 diabetic, been on it for years. Never knew it was used to aid weight loss though. She's only stated to lose weight lately as she is really really watching what she eats. And her sugar levels still drop down.

I always understood it was used to help your sugar levels much the same way insulin does for a type 1 diabetic, no?

i think 'they' found that some people with certian type of insulin resistance may respond to metformin to help with weight loss. it was not very widely recognized 10 years ago.

    PCOS and insulin dysfunction:

Hyperinsulinaemia, insulin resistance and impaired glucose tolerance are very common in women with PCOS, particularly in those with a body mass index (BMI = weight in kg/height in m2) greater than 30. Insulin stimulates androgen production by the ovary, which worsens most symptoms of PCOS. Suppression of androgen production does not improve insulin resistance, leading to the belief that it may be a primary cause of PCOS, at least for some women. Many propose that insulin resistant women with PCOS should be considered a distinct sub-group within the large scope of this highly variable disorder, which may have many distinct causes. Fertility seems to be particularly affected in this sub-group, most of whom will have irregular menstrual cycles and be anovulatory.

    PCOS, obesity and insulin resistance:

Glucose can be converted to fat, and in the face of insulin resistance by the liver and skeletal muscle, the body creates fat with the excess glucose in the blood. What's worse, the high insulin levels associated with insulin resistance inhibit the breakdown of fat. In effect, women with insulin resistance gain weight easily and lose it with difficulty. Therefore, overweight women with PCOS usually have a real metabolic reason for their weight problems, and obesity is seen in 40-60% of such women. Many lean women with this disorder admit to working very hard to maintain normal weight. Both obesity and insulin resistance are thought to have a genetic basis, although the genetic effects of both can be modified by lifestyle choices (see below). Also, these conditions are not exclusive to women with PCOS, but the elevated androgens in this disorder make both conditions worse. Due to the activity of androgens, weight tends to accumulate over the abdomen rather than the hips in women with PCOS and this type of fat is highly associated with insulin resistance. It is important to note that some lean women with PCOS also demonstrate certain degrees of insulin dysfunction. Therefore women with PCOS cannot rule out insulin dysfunction if they are not obese. However, obesity in combination with insulin resistance puts one at higher risk for infertility, diabetes, and heart disease.

How much are you paying to get the Metformin covered? :O

That's nuts that you could get it prescribed for that.

I was on it when they thought I was type 2, and I'm sure it was a fair amount of money for the 500 tablets.

What most people are not aware of is that people who have diabetes (or just anyone in general really), and avoid all forms of sugar (anything that is considered carby) will lose weight without medicine, and will also find their diabetes evens out so they do not NEED medicine.

Taking diabetes medicine to lose weight sounds ridiculous IMO.

Ok, lets get this straight I am NOT diabetic. I am not taking this medicine to just lose weight. I am also insulin resistant which comes with having pcos. People with pcos have a hard time losing any kind of weight. I could live of green peppers for the rest of my life work out every day lift weights and not lose weight because of the way my body deals with insulin. SO for the sake of my health and because of the condition I have relying on a drug to help me with insulin which will in turn help me lose weight is necessary.
