Default 92 dpi? need some guidance on how to do

Ok, I'm a camera dummy and need some help.

I have to send some photos away to apply for an event, and they specify that the photos must be jpg, approx 1200 pixels wide or long at 92dpi.

The photos I take with my camera come out into my photo program at 72 dpi. I can put them into a resizing program and change the dpi to 92, but that doesn't make any sense does it? Wouldn't that just make them less clear if I do them that way?
Is it my camera that I need to adjust to take photos to come out at 92 dpi?

Hope you can help me... thanks.

If you take them at the highest resolution your camera can handle you should come out to more than 1200 pixels wide at 72 dpi. That given, you'll be able to reduce the number of pixels wide and increase the dpi without degredation since you've got that many pixels anyway.

Thanks NoCasa, so you think they'll be ok for quality? These photos are for a juried event, and 92 is what they want for dpi.
When I download my photos out of my camera, they are WELL over 1200 on one side at 72 dpi. I just didn't think that made sense manually increasing the dpi with a computer re-sizing program.
