Default Chihuahua ate a pork bone...

I know this isn't the right section, but I can't wait for someone to answer me in Pet Talk. I need a number now. I'll delete it after.

We gave our 4 pound chihuahua a pork bone with some meat left on it tonight, thinking she would just chew the meat off, and we can't find the bone anywhere. I can't believe she could eat it, but it's gone. We are new to having a dog, and don't have a vet. I need some emergency numbers in case I need it. We don't really have money but I guess we'll have to suck it up, if she needs medical help. And yes, before you all scold me, I now realize dogs shouldn't have cooked bones, and no, we won't do it again.

Generally it's just chicken bones you'd have to worry about because they splinter. If the dog isn't choking I would worry about it. Just watch the bowel movements and if it's hacking constantly.

From what I've googled, cooked pork bone breaks into shards, and chihuahuas have died from it cutting up their intestines.

We take our chihuahua to Dr. Gunam at the Animal Health Clinic. He and his staff have always been very good with our dog.

I called the people I got her from, and they took her to the Animal Health Clinic. I called there, got the emerg #, and called it. I'm waiting for the on call vet to call me back. Not sure if I should be trying to make her vomit somehow or if I should be giving her oil or vaseline to make her passage smoother. She's fine at the moment, but it can take hours before it becomes a problem, and I don't want to wait until she's suffering.

The vet called back and said to give her some mineral oil (which I don't have) or vegetable oil - something to get her moving. I gave her some canola oil, but I happen to have boiled down some turkey bones tonight and skimmed off some of the fat to mix in with the canola oil. She gobbled it up. I've got the broth in the freezer right now so fat can harden, and I can separate it from the broth. I will continue to give her bits of fat until she either has a bowel movement or vomits. If she starts vomitting, I have to call the doctor back.

I had a cocker spaniel when I was young. He had a small piece of bone that the vet said was stuck somewhere. We gave him mineral oil in his food once a week and he had no more bowel problems.

She started hacking a while ago, and I realized there was a bone stuck in her throat. I gave her a bunch of bacon fat to try to make her vomit and push the bone out. She did throw up, and there was one piece of bone in it. .Now she's eating and drinking again and seems much perkier. She's also stopped wriggling and wimpering. We're not out of the woods yet though. She still has to pass the rest of the bone fragments. Hopefully they're tiny.

So far so good. She has pooped normal a couple of times this morning, and the kids say she was drinking fine, but not eating a lot. A 4lb chihuahua just doesn't eat a lot though. I was up until 2am with her, so I slept in this morning.

I have a chi who is 3 pounds and I give her a raw meat along with kibble. She has no problems eating the bones raw. Try that next time. I give all my dogs steak and pork chops and chicken raw.

I give all my bones to my dog, cooked or raw, expect for chicken. I buy chicken legs or thighs, as long as they're on sale, and she eats them raw. She loves them. Every dog has powerful acid in their stomachs, big or small, it doesn't matter. As long as they can swallow it, its all good. Never, never, never give her cooked chicken bones.

I just thought I'd give an update to anyone interested. I took Abby to the vet today for an exam and x-ray. $240 later, she is just fine. LOL She still has small bits of bone in her, but it's balled up in her poop. She is constipated though, so she gave me lactulose for her. Also, apparently, bacon grease was something I should not have given her. I guess their pancreas cannot process it properly, and made her sick as well. So I was also given an antibiotic for her. Me and my wallet will be MUCH more careful about what we give to her in the future.

I feel your pain Jackie. I woke up this morning cause I heard the puppy eating something to find out she ate a bottle of my narcotics. She must have got up on the table. I was in a freaking panic. Called the vet asap and we induced vomiting. Hopefully she'll make it. I'm worried sick now. I have no idea how much she ate either.

Yeah I'm a bit freaked out. And feel so bad that I left them on the table. Lesson learned. Wish it wasn't at my puppies expense.
