I respect my employer and they they respect me and i feel that if my employer is going to invest in me then i will respect them and do my job that i was hired to, not hide in the back on my cellphone or other personal device surfing the net or playing games. I have on occasion with my bosses permission surfed news sites and stuff when it was slow and have always made sure my main jobs were done. I have never hid it. I just think that if you have a job then you should not be hiding playing games or messing around on your cellphone unless you are on break or you have permission to access the device. But most jobs I have worked at cellphones and ipods were not allowed on your person while you were actually on the clock.

So in the example where my employer and I can have mutual respect for each other then no, I do not think it would be appropriate to **** around, but if my employer treated me like garbage, I would. Sorry, just cause you pay me doesn't mean you can treat me like crap. I have more self respect than that.

Hopefully for another 8 years, been at it for 27 now and respecting my employer has allowed me to go from an entry level position to senior management, it's work pretty good for me.

Well personally anything I do that has my name attached to it I do it to the best of my ability. Even if my boss was a dink and treated me like crap *which he doesn't* i would still do the job to the best of my ability and not disrespect the company or it's policies.

True enough...I take pride in the work I do. Besides, you never know who will notice your work. Just because your immediate boss is an ass doesn't mean that someone else above or equal to them won't notice your good work and take an interest in your performance.
IMO, crappy work = bad attitude = waste of time and $

very true and depending on where you work it could have an effect on your future employment .ie if you work in a store or an office you never know who you will be seeing about another job and they could remember you as "that goof off". They don't care what your bosses attitude towards you was they just know you as the "goof off".

What if I am so good at my job that I can perfect my functions, and even over perform and yet still have time to surf?

This happened with my husband. He worked at Shaw Cable when high speed first came on. He was so efficient, he had all his service calls done usually by noon, whereas the other guys took longer to get their portion done. I'm not bragging, he just really is very good at what he does. Anyway, he would spend time in his office in the afternoons, and did some surfing during that time. He ended up coming into work one day and being told he was no longer needed, his position no longer existed. He wasn't fired per say.... I guess maybe he should have dumbed himself down and took all day to do a 3 hour job. Maybe they would have kept him on.

If you are at work and you are NOT on a break should you be on line surfing on your bosses dime? I know most jobs require some compurter/internet access and i have on occasion with my boss permission surfed when it was extreamly slow and all my other jobs were done. But what about surfing on personal devices when you are one the clock?

If you were paying a (insert contractor here) to do some work on (insert object here). Would you be upset if he or she was chatting and surfin on their PDA instead of doing the work you hired them for?
