The Louisville-based Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) has seen its membership drop by half since the mid-1960s.

The Courier-Journal of Louisville reports the denomination reached its membership peak of 4.25 million in 1965. Since then, membership has fallen by more than 50 percent.

According to a recent report, the church lost nearly 3 percent of members from 2008 to 2009 and now has about 2.1 million people on its rolls.

The Rev. Gradye Parsons, stated clerk for the denomination, is taking heart in a rise in adult baptisms and survey results showing members are enthusiastic about their churches and ministries.

Presbyterians aren't alone in membership declines. American Protestant denominations have lost millions of members in recent decades.
