I think if your regular tires are in good shape, and you actually know how to drive in the winter, you don't need "snow" tires. It's worked for me for 40 years.

    You think wrong!
The mandatory winter tire laws are made for people like you.
Why put yourself to the test every time you get behind the wheel?
And, buy a winter tire not an all season; the difference is enormous!

If more people put themselves to the test when they got behind the wheel, there might be less accidents.

...put themselves to the test on snow tires, then I would agree with you.
It's not good advice to tell people to stay on your summer tires and just learn to drive!
I say get off your wallet!

Jack, I too drove for 35 years on summers, or all seasons, and Byrd is absolutely correct.

Experience counts. If you don't have it, you need to buy snows.

BTW, my family van now has studs all the way around. Used and cheap. My car has snows, came with it. And my everyday driver??? Well, look for me as I drive around you.

    No Byrd is not!
Of course experience counts and my experience says, you need to get off your wallet as well!
I would have expected you to be more prepared than that!
The mandatory snow tire law can't come too soon!

A Byrd on the road is worth two in the snowbank.

Does a Soundbear get stuck in the woods ?

    I think not !

And the guy I saw slide off the highway this morning probably thought his all seasons were good enough too...especially since he had 4 wheel drive...helped him try to get back out of the ditch I suppose...

Came back from Sudbury a couple of years ago after a big snowstorm, with my 2- wheel drive and all season radials.

Came around a couple of corners and drove by 4-wheel drive SUVs sitting in snowbanks.

For some reason, I made it home without leaving the highway. Go figure.

I've done it too, big deal!
It's just not good advice to direct people away from winter tires.
While you nurse your throttle and hold up traffic, feel good knowing you got your game face on.
I can't wait for the mandatory laws!

Your mandatory laws do absolutely nothing to save lives UNLESS there is actually snow for the tires to to ride in.

90 perceent of our winter driving is on bare roads.

I'll take the additional lives saved on snow or those lives don't matter because they can't drive in the winter with summers!
You forgot black ice on bare roads! Hardly an issue for summers and experience, yeah?
Well...80% of the time when people use stats, they make them up!

I didn't forget black ice. I laugh at guys who say "drive to conditions" like some kind of mantra.

So I should drive 25 K all the way to Wawa because 1 bridge has black ice??

    That's what studs are for.

Yeah, getting my brand new snow tires put on this Monday. Looks like it's about time. You know, I've driven for years on these roads and I've driven pretty well, all things considered. I've taken several courses in winter driving, etc. There's really no substitute for having decent equipment to do the job IN ADDITION to good driving skills and training.

I used to think snow tires were a waste of money, until I actually tried them. The difference was quite surprising.

Experience and common sense does count for a lot, but neither will help you stop faster when some jacka** cuts you off - or when a kid runs out from behind a snowbank or parked car.

^^ good point. Snow tires can save lives, don't care what anyone says. I had a kid fall off a snowbank last year right in front of me but I was able to stop in time. I had snow tires. It was snowing, slippery, and I was doing about 35-40kms down Gibbs st. "Oh well if you had all seasons you could have stopped in time too"... Is that worth finding out?
