Default Another smoking thread? I'm at a loss for words.

    http://www.canadastock.ca/Brokers/questrade.html

"The identity of the victim in Sault Ste. Marie's first fatal fire since 2005 has been released.

Barbara Pyykonen, 68, died Wednesday night after her clothing caught fire in her apartment at 100 James Street, Assistant Fire Chief Paul Milosevich tells SooToday.com

Pyykonen's clothing was believed to be saturated with oxygen.

She is believed to have been smoking while connected to an oxygen machine, says Dan Newburn, who is investigating her death for the Ontario Fire Marshall's Office."

she would not have paid that price if she would have turned off her oxygen, it may have ignited from lighting a candle or making a toast...if she didnt shut off the tank when around open heat, this is something she would have been told many times, stop jumping on the "must be the cigarettes fault" band wagon!

    Condolences to the family.

It was from smoking. I had the misfortune of seeing this woman in the ICU while my brother was in there and it was heartbreaking. A very sad situation indeed.
You know spending quite a bit of time in the ICU was an eye opener. I don't care what the reason is no one deserves to die period. You can pick at smoking or people but some of you really need to think about what you say especially if some of the family members of the deceased reads these boards.

    Agree...
People on this board aren't concerned about thinking what they say, they are too busy trying to sound cool and tough and trying to convince others that they are the same on this board as they are in real life.
Fact is, if this was someone they knew, or even someone they saw, no one would be *****in' about smoking.
The poor family, this is a tragedy, period.

it is tragic, and many people dont realize how easily oxygen ignites, I have seen a quite a few people do this and luckily only 2 ignited...hopefully it will help other to understand the dangers of smoking/cooking/ or being near open flames of any kind while oxygen is in use...my condolences also.

This is horrible tragedy. I can't help but wonder though, if she was aware of the dangers or not. When people are given oxygen machines, are they also given a tutorial in the "what not to do's"?

Yes this was a tragic way to die..............her hubby was sleeping at the time but woke when this happened. Her neice said there was no way she could survive. But her hubby is blaming himself for not watching her. She did it once before and he caught her just in time. The poor guy is blaming himself. Why I don't know? Poor man !!

She paid the ultimate price indeed and it has no doubt left a tragic scar on her family. I don't know anyone on oxygen so I can't ask them personally, but wouldn't the patient be advised of this danger by either the doctor or agency/business that supplies the oxygen?

It is a horrible tragedy....don't forget this lady was 68 years old...she might not have been thinking clearly..hell she may have had some sort of other mental conditions who knows. But yes it could have happened from a candle, anything.......This is a somewhat funny story as no one got hurt.....so here it goes.
My grandfather was living at my parents as he was palliative care with lung cancer. Medigas came in and hooked up his oxygen and had the tubes running throughout the house the tanks were kept in the "sunroom" and he was able to go from living room, bed, bathroom, kitchen and even on the bck deck without moving the tanks all the while staying hooked up to the oxygen. My grandfather didn't smoke but my grandmother did. My grandmother was 80 at the time....so my mom comes home from work and there is my grandmother sitting in the sunroom smoking. My mom asked her why she was smoking int here and she was worried about smoking around my grandfather with is oxygen. My mom told my grandmother to look beside her. There were two huge oxygen takns sitting right next to her ashtray......My grandmother could have blown them sky high....not literally. It wasn't funny at the time now we look back and kind of chuckle. She didn't realize that it was dangerous smoking there. But who knows what went through this ladies head and we will never know. It is tragic that she died like this, know one deserves that. Too bad some people don't have a heart.

When I worked for a homecare agency it was explained to me that those that are on home oxygen are explained the dangers of smoking while on oxygen and apparently the oxygen supplier is supposed to refuse to deliver the oxygen if it is suspected the client is smoking while hooked up.
