Anyone here have any experience with a solid state hard drive as their primary?

I just picked up an intel 80gb ssd and the difference is like night and day. Almost zero boot time, any apps that are installed on the drive have cut loading times down by about 85%.

If your running XP id suggest a Kingston SSD for its garbage collection as xp doesnt support trim. IF your to get one id wait till boxing day and pick up a 160gb drive for super cheap.

I couldn't wait so I ordered a 60 gig OCZ Vertex 2 plus a WD 1TB Black for general storage. I would have prefered the 2 TB but it has been back ordered. Since installing Windows 7 my current OS drive, Raptor 30 gb, has been filling up to the point of not being able to download and games I've bought from either GFWL or GOG because even though I tell it to store the files on d drive it still uses a temp folder on C.
Is it possible to copy the current OS onto the new OCZ drive with say Shadow Copy. I hope to be able to make the switch seamlessly so that my apps on my other drives continue to function normally , ie registry entries in place.

I have used a Patriot Warp v2 64GB SSD in my laptops. Windows would boot completely in very short order, maybe 20-30 seconds, and shutdown completely in about 7 seconds. For comparison average read speeds would be about 50MB/s with the stock hard drive, and over 135MB/s with the SSD. Write speeds were significantly faster too. The newer drives with the SandForce chipset are supposed to be extremely fast.

I run a Sandisk Extreme 8GB Compact Flash card as my main drive in an Openfiler storage system. Not sure what the numbers are but the card is stamped as 60MB/s. It boots reasonably quick and uses very little power to operate.

I got my system up and running. I created an image of my Raptor C drive and simply transfered it onto the SSD. Upper dDeck helped me with a few things too. Overall I'm very happy with the performance upgrade.

Wow, those are some pretty nice numbers! My Patriot is SATA II, the Sandisk is PATA. I bet using the PCIe slot directly shows much better transfer rates! Thanks for the link.

I picked up 2 intel 40 GB and put them in raid 0. Pretty amazing read speeds.

Fast bootup other than now I have to run through a screen while the AHCI bios boots up, adding 5 seconds to the boot time. I have a Gigabyte mobo and i flashed the bios to a newer version and it shaved it down a bit. I like the way everything is up and working almost instantly.
