make sure you buy good pencils, not those cheap ones that break 10 times everytime you have to sharpen them.

For various reasons I've not been a world traveller in my lifetime....Calgary, PEI and FLA are the furthest I've been. But, in hearing and reading about other people's travels.....especially in the last 4 or 5 years.....it blows me away how many people bring A LOT of small inexpensive stuff for the locals. This is not an organized church group or other NGO but individuals who do it every time they go to these places.

I honestly had no idea about this until friends were talking about it 5 years ago. Since then I've heard more and more people mentioning it, asking about it, doing it. And I think it is a wonderful thing, especially as it is a grassroots effort rather than formally organized.

Another thing..When I go to cuba, I take bars of soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, even bottles of perfume, deodorant all from the dollar store. I give that stuff to the maids. People don't know this but any tips they get they have to claim to the hotel and they are taxed HEAVILY on the tips, so they actually prefer all the type of stuff I mentioned as they aren't taken away and can't be taxed and well a family of 4 in cuba is alotted one bar of soap a month. Those items are expensive and hard to come by. I also left my shampoo, tylenol, gravol, immodium and such at the end of my trip. medications and such are also very expensive for them so I left it, the maids were so thankful.

I have some fishing supplies to donate after my fishing trip, I have some saxaphone reeds which are hard to get in cuba for my night in havana, and i wanted to bring the kids to a local school so they can get it in their heads that they have it pretty good here. We have alot of pencils and pens, crayons but they dont do much good when they dont have any paper lol.

I went to Rexal this morning to check it out. Some really good deals there. I bought some 2 packs of the mini DV cassettes for a camcorder, regular $12.99, I paid around $3.00 for them. Notebooks .37, pencils and pens cheap, math sets, and they still had a few backpacks. Great prices, almost makes me wish I needed a backpack.

They had a bunch of binders. Unfortunately, I wasn't looking for binders, so I don't remember how much they were. I'm sure you could call and ask though. They had some nice cloth and mesh pencil cases too, and a velcro thing tht you can wrap around your books to hold them together.
