Default Western leaders call for Nato to target Gaddafi

Senior western leaders called for Nato to adopt an assassination policy against Col Muammar Gaddafi to salvage the bombing campaign in Libya from a descent into stalemate.

The calls came as Col Gaddafi was reported to have strengthened his grip on power by repatriating billions of dollars in overseas assets that should have been frozen by UN sanctions.

On Sunday, there was growing pressure on Coalition forces to directly target Col Gaddafi with military strikes.

Senator Lindsey Graham, a Republican member of the Senate Armed Services committee, said that the quickest way to end the emerging stalemate was to "cut the head of the snake off". He said: "The people around Gaddafi need to wake up every day wondering, 'Will this be my last?'

Why, exactly, is NATO in Libya again?

For once Big Bird and I agree, oil, pure and simple. Major economy's cannot, will-not allow much if anything threaten their supply of oil. Price fixing aside.

How is Libya different? Let me count the ways. Unlike Egypt, Libya is a huge oil producer with the ninth-largest proven reserves of oil in the world. Nearly 20% of Libya’s oil production is currently shut down by the chaos.
The rise in oil prices because of this mess is a convenient bonus for the oil sands and every oil producer, for sure.

Assassinations of government officials is nothing new, but when did it become OK to publicly call for them? What did Senator Graham mean when he said, "cut the head of the snake off. The people around Gaddafi need to wake up every day wondering, 'Will this be my last?" Does Graham mean that the economic gains justifies the means?

The original reason given a few weeks ago was that the mission was humanitarian. What a joke.

What's interesting is that in April 2008 WTI crude oil was about 135$/barrel, and it currently is about 100$. Brent was slightly higher in April 2008 compared to today.
But I don't remember the price of gas being as high back then as it is today?

Can you say GREED? This is not the property of the U.S. We sport it (and support it)as well. Albeit through American companies but none the less.

On June 16, 2008, I paid $1.52 for gas at the local Shell Station. The price of oil at the time was around $140 per barrel. We have since started paying an extra 8% thanks to the HST. Pretty much works out.

If this were to have been posted by one of your Grade 1 students, it might have been funny. As it came from you, it just reinforces your own level of immaturity. Most adults outgrow "potty humour" by the time they reach puberty.

NATO has begun “a hunt for Gaddafi with the aim of eliminating him”, reported the British Sky News TV channel. Blows delivered to Gaddafi’s residence in Tripoli in the small hours of Monday are a reflection of this new course of action. NATO air force fired missiles at the building where Gaddafi met with the delegation of the African Union several days ago. The Daily Telegraph reports that the political leaders of a number of Western countries have appealed to NATO “to recognize Gaddafi as a target for elimination”. The situation in Libya is in a deadlock and Gaddafi’s elimination is one of the solutions,” the newspaper quotes some western political scientists’ opinion.

Why? Why the hell is NATO bombing Libya?

    Here's part of the reason:

"Chaos in Libya will raise the strategic importance of Alberta's oilsands, but that shouldn't stop energy companies from making a more environmentally friendly product, says Britain's envoy to Canada.

British High Commissioner Andrew Pocock said the crisis in Libya will affect Alberta energy producers.

Much of Libya's oil and gas production has been shut down, as security forces loyal to Moammar Gadhafi wage a fierce battle against opposition fighters for control of the country's lucrative oil fields. The turmoil has kept oil prices above $100 a barrel.

"Resources like the oilsands will become more strategically important," Pocock told The Canadian Press on Wednesday. He said, though, that the crisis illustrates the pressing need to find more sustainable, low-carbon energy alternatives."

Oh well. At least with Canada involved we can rest assured the bombs will be tolerant and compassionate bombs.

    Or so I'm told.

I have to endure it, because you guys would be lost without me. You are addicted to me. I can no more leave here and have you survive than heroin could leave the junkie's bloodstream and have him survive.

But we're certainly willing to go cold turkey.
