    Default quoting Ayn Rand

Haven't read much of Ayn Rand but here is a fantastic quote - "When you see that in order to produce, you need to obtain permission from men who produce nothing; when you see that money is flowing to those who deal not in goods, but in favors; when you see that men get rich more easily by graft than by work, and your laws no longer protect you against them, but protect them against you… you may know that your society is doomed.

I am not very familiar with Rand's core values and teachings. Can someone share? NewCasa, are you familiar with the writings?

Heartless capitalism. Pure, unadulterated utilitarianism. Selfishness to the highest degree. Care for others is non-existent.

Her ideology is Objectivism. When you have time, look it up. It's not very pretty.

I believe her philosophy came from her early years in communist USSR. If you want a synopsis read her manifesto "The Virtue of Selfishness". It's around 100 pages. Her best in my opinion was The Fountainhead and it was quite interesting. Basically she espoused a world where pure self interest was the only real driving force. I found some merit in her concepts, however at the same time I found them much too simplistic.

Yep exactly and probably why I left my first husband....being married and following the virtue of selfishness leaves one partner very lonely and very hurt most of the time. But apparently Ayn Rand has a pretty large following. I guess when you are an impressionable teen reading her books it can do something to your way of thinking.

I read her books when I was in my late teens. No ill effects here

I think anyone who follows her philosophy by rote is about as naive as someone who believes we should all live on communes and work for the greater good. People don't work that way. There's no single solution to anything. Honestly, I found Roark (her hero in the Fountainhead) to be somewhat psychotic and one-dimensional.

Your husband must have been quite selfish to begin with and used this stuff to justify it in his own mind.

EX HUSBAND............EXXXXXX HUSBAND! and I said the word impressionable. There are teens that are impressionable and some who are not. He quite possibly could have been. His theory was you don't do things because it is nice you do it because you either want to or don't...and never should feel guilty if you just choose not to. His theory wasn't based on acquaintences or people you just met but this was how he lived with his family and close friends as well. Here is an example

We all went away to DR Husband/me/ my parents/my brother/his friend so we were there for 2 weeks. The entire time whenever we were by the pool or beach if I got up to get a drink I would ask everyone else if they wanted something. My parents brother and his friend also did the same. SO one day my husband gets up and walks off. My mom says "where's he going?" I shrugged my shoulders and said probably the bathroom. Then he comes back with one glass in hand. I asked him if he got any of us anything his response was no. I was like you didn't tell us you were getting drinks...He responded with I didn't have to. I said we have all always gotten everyone something when we would go up why wouldn't you. He replied with because I didn't want to. Why should I feel like I have to. I told him he didn't have to but it was a nice thing to do since we all did it. He said he lives for himself and that there is no such thing as BEING NICE, you have to make yourself happy and think of yourself. He says this is what he learned from Ayn Rand, he tried to live by her teachings.
