Default Step away from the vehicle. You need to be walking.

Flashing red lights, and a big noisy yellow house sized thing coming at you...

Oh please stop jumping to conclusions. Maybe the lights had green dye on them and the driver assumed that meant go. Perhaps there was a painting on the train that made it look like it was a road ahead.

    But let's try anyway.

Train goes by. Car hits train. Hey soul sister.

The train usually if I'm not mistaken, moves rather slowly through that intersection since that is the main train yard for Huron Central. Perhaps the train moved quicker this time and the driver underestimated it? or the driver was drunk?

I think maybe the driver decided not to stop and look both ways or else the sun was in their eyes...........could have been texting too.

Well, as someone who lives on the hill, I know that if they were headed southbound, there is no way in hell the sun was in their eyes. It wouldn't be that way until mid-late afternoon.

If they were northbound, it is unlikely it was in their eyes, unless it was about now... the sun is just getting up there in the sky behind my house.

Methinks someone ignored the flashing red lights, didn't look both ways, or figured, "I got lots of time!"

How preoccupied could you be to miss train lights.

Enough to get whacked, obviously. I don't believe he was the first nor will he be the last. It does happen with some regularity, I see it on YouTube all the time.

I don't know these circumstances but a friend of mine got hit by a train when there was a second train behind the first one. He waited for the first train to clear the intersection, and not thinking of a second train, proceeded to cross the tracks, even though the lights were still flashing. Wham! No major injuries but a destroyed car. He said he thought the lights were still flashing due to the first train.
