    Default Oh, Canada!!!

Despite Canada’s riches, many Canadians are suffering from poverty, inequality and an inability to afford daily food needs, says a scathing United Nations report released Wednesday.

“What I’ve seen in Canada is a system that presents barriers for the poor to access nutritious diets and that tolerates increased inequalities between rich and poor, and aboriginal non-aboriginal peoples,” said Olivier De Schutter, the UN right-to-food envoy.

“Canada has long been seen as a land of plenty. Yet today one in 10 families with a child under 6 is unable to meet their daily food needs. These rates of food insecurity are unacceptable, and it is time for Canada to adopt a national right-to-food strategy,” said De Schutter.

His report was based on an 11-day mission to Canada, his first investigation of what he called “a rich, developed country.”

“This is a country that is rich but that fails to adapt the levels of social assistance benefits and its minimum wage to the rising costs of basic necessities, including food and housing,” De Schutter said.

Last year, he said, close to 900,000 Canadians were turning to food banks each month.

...Mr. De Schutter recapped his experiences here and sniffed, “Well, look, the tradition is that when I visit countries on official missions, I have meetings at cabinet level.” He explained that meeting with mere bureaucrats, as he has done while in Canada, simply does not suffice for his purposes. “I need to speak to the ministers,” he complained,...

...In a hard-hitting interview this week with Postmedia News, Olivier De Schutter also blasted Canada for its “appallingly poor” record of taking recommendations from UN human-rights bodies seriously....
Poor guy can't figure out why we don't take him seriously.

If you didn't take me seriously you wouldn't respond all the time.

You don't win medals in international hockey tournaments anymore, but your captain can pick a fight with a female. You must be so proud.

Seriously, no one is obsessed with Canada. It's an impossibility.

Even Canadians don't like being Canadian.

    Afghans happier than Americans!

Leger Marketing surveyed about 53,000 people in a total of 58 countries. Leger asked participants whether they were unhappy or happy in 2011. The happiest country was Fiji. People there no doubt enjoy the weather and beaches and laid back life style.

Canada ranked 23rd. In spite of the poor economy and disasters in Japan they tied with Canada. An even bigger surprise was that Afghans were happier than Americans.

No doubt some countries that are relatively well off have unhappy people because expectations are high. This may explain the Afghan U.S. anomaly. Relatively, the situation in Afghanistan is probably not as bad as it has been. In the U.S. unemployment, and the general economic situation has been worse than earlier and looks bad for the future.

Canada's net happiness score was 47 per cent much above Afghanistan at 35 and the U.S. at 33 per cent. Fiji the happiest country had a net happiness score of 85. The score is the result of subtracting the percentage of happy people from unhappy people.

It would seem a smart man could prove his theory by not remaining focused on Canadian issues. One that's not so smart would continue posting articles about the same country.

I know many Canadians. Easily, 90% would rather be American.

But there's nothing wrong with that. There's nothing wrong with seeing the best, and wanting to be part of it. It's healthy, actually.

You're right bohd, he doesn't know many Canadians.
''Our culture has accepted two huge lies: The first is that if you disagree with someone’s lifestyle, you must fear them or hate them. The second is that to love someone means you agree with everything they believe or do. Both are nonsense. You don’t have to compromise convictions to be compassionate.''
