That is because in Canada regulation is that all labels show the alcohol by volume where as in the states it is the alcohol by weight.

ummm really thought 7% alcohol is 7% regardless of weight. sorry I don't drink beer but there is a reason why people can drink 10 american beers as opposed to 5 canadian beers. Everyone knows the alcohol content in american beer is less.

So, just kind of curious, if I go over for a couple of hours, I can now bring back $200.00 worth or will they now enforce the full 24 hr. rule ?

I find they are much more lax than they used to be. We bring back at least $100 in goods on day trips. (usually $150 or so) They don't ask for receipts and hardly glance into the back seat. It just doesn't seem to be an issue any more. We've always brought back one bottle of wine (which you are not supposed to for a day trip), but we declare it and we've never had a problem.

One night, the guard asked where I was from, I answered him and he waved at me and shut the window before I was even out of the bay lol. I think he was tired or hung over and didn't feel like talking. I've never seen it so relaxed like that when going into the US. Some of the guards over there are like interrogators and want to know where I work and the relationship of the other people in my car? huh? Such silly questions but I smile and answer politely, meanwhile I'm thinking what a jerk he/she is lol.

I can understand them asking what the relationship is with other people in your car. It isn't always about what you answer but how you answer and if it looks like you are hiding something. Some people try to smuggle others over. Perhaps you are just giving a stranger a ride over. Wouldn't you rather them know that upfront in case they search your car and find something you shouldn't have. There are always reasons for their questions whether we understand them or not or like them or not. Besides you are entering their country they have every right to refuse you entry if they feel like it.

I was asked quite often my relationship with my husband. Because my passport is still in my maiden name, they were quite confused. I've also been asked if my daughter is mine, because her birth certificate is in Daddy's last name. Doesn't particularly bother me.

I bring home about 150-200 every week and a half or so in groceries. I am usually with my husband, but have gone myself and they don't blink an eye.

lynys I am the same way I never changed my name so I have a different last name than my husband and my child. Hence why I keep the long form birth certificate with my sons passport as it has me listed as mother with my maiden name, I often travel without my husband this way they don't think I am kidnapping or anything never had a problem and never have an issue answering their questions. alot of times I joke about the question with the officer and they laugh. I especially like when they ask if you are bringing more than 10K in cash into the country. I laugh and said if I had 10K in free cash to bring into this country would I be driving this car? and they laugh.

Oh, I changed my name. But, I had just received my passport about three months before my husband and I were married, so I figured I wouldn't throw away another 80 some dollars on a new one. It expires next year, so I will change it then.

I've brought back over 250 dollars and never had to pay duty. They don't ask for receipts very often. I used to bring back beer once in a while and I found by doing that, they want receipts or they pull you in. Once I stopped doing that they never ask.
We cross at least once a week and I was constantly questioned about my boys last names. They have my first husband's name which is different from mine. I guess after crossing so much, they quit asking...lol.

Even getting pulled in with beer, on the odd time they do pull you in, you still pay about 10-15 dollars less per case than here.

I bring back a 12 pack a week, and they never bother me. I always declare it - if I've bought it at walmart with groceries, I tell them I spent 70 bucks at walmart Including 12 beer or if I get it seperately I tell them 70 bucks and 12 beer.. . Never had a problem with them.

Pretty sure those rules apply to Duty, not HST. Doesn't matter how long you are over there, they can still make you pay the HST if they want to.

I have never been charged the HST if I have brought over what I was entitled to after a certain length of time. We go to florida for 5 weeks we are allowed like 700 each person we have never been asked to pay HST....And even now if you spend more than what you are entitled to they don't charge you duty unless it is tobacco, alcohol, or gas but you pay the HST only and no hst on baby items.
