Default Partial roof collapse at Algo Centre Mall

    http://www.elliotlakestandard.ca/Art...aspx?e=3589077

A portion of the roof collapsed at the Algo Centre Mall in Elliot Lake Saturday. A large part of the roof serves as a parking area for customers and business owners.

It is rumoured two vehicles had fallen through a gap that had opened in the roof.

so far they are not reporting any deaths but there is an team of people heading up from down south to come help our locals dig through debris to look for the people who are missing. they are reporting up to 30 people missing. the roof fell in and then the second floor caved in as well. the mall has been in rough shape for a long time, and should have been torn down years ago. it was allowed to sit with the roof leaking everywhere for years and the city/mall owners did nothing about it even though they knew the problems were there.

they are still not telling us anything other than 22 people were injured and released from the hospital right after the initial cave in. they are now reporting the list of missing people to be 2 pages long but not giving out any exact numbers.

I wonder what they are trying to hide. Or should I say that we will know when the people from Southern Ont. check it out. Sounds really bad.

Its horrible to hear this. I hope the entire mall gets torn down completely, since it's useless anyways. All the stores in it can fit into a small plaza. No need keeping a building like this around.

Just heard on the national CTV news that they think they are 2 dead-have not been able to get to them yet....had been able to hear tapping earlier. Terrible news.

I lived in Elliot lake for 38 years and watched them build that death trap. The roof in the library area started leaking before the place was 10 years old. This, sadly, was inevitable to happen eventually.

They can see a hand and foot sticking out from under a slab of concrete. Sounds like a casualty to me.

Watching CTV tonight in Toronto. They just reported that rescue efforts have NOT BEEN STARTED YET?? And they hear someone tapping. This is hard to take. What are they waiting for? This is not the World Trade Centre.

they are removing pieces with a crane right now, trying to take out the large unstable pieces so they can go in without causing more deaths. i am glad they are finally talking. they should not have waited so long. the list of missing is down to nine for the time being. hopefully it will be lower than that. i am kind of numb. i have heard from a family member who was in the foodcourt when this happened that there were at least two people he saw that could not have lived. we, in the community have no idea who the victims/possible victims are although i have heard that a friends mother is unaccounted for. i am very angry that this was allowed to happen and that seems to be the theme amongst just about everyone i've heard from. why has this building passed inspection so long? why was it allowed to stay open when there were so many problems with it? as long as i can remember that piece of cement has 'wobbled', i stood there so many times waiting for a ride home with groceries and felt the ground shake every time a car drove over it, just that one section that fell. can you imagine if this had happened on the 20th when half the town and their kids were in the mall?

This is so terrible. Our Aunt and Uncle live there, and when I saw the pic I made my husband call her right away - thats where she always parks... She had been at the mall on Saturday and had left less than an hour before, her office is in the mall too.

My thoughts go out to those who are missing, those missing loved ones, and those working to find them.

obviously there is a reason for this......sheesh, I am sure they are NOT WAITING to do a rescue.

Search and rescue operations are slow because much of the heavy debris from the roof remains unstable.

Large pieces of concrete and steel girders, some weighing several tonnes, are leaning precariously on what remains of the escalators and other debris.

A crane has been brought in to assist.

A crew from a local Construction company has been sent there to assist in the re-inforcing and debris removal. Hopefully they will be able to help!
