Despite all the best efforts of mankind, I don't foresee the world actually ending at our own hands. Sure, we could wipe out many millions in a widescale conflict, or decimate the population with disease or widespread destruction of our environment, but I have confidence that there will be enough survivors to give mankind another 'kick at the can'.
What does concern me, and has me occasionally looking to the heavens, is the remote possibility of a large meteor, headed our way. Scientists have known of the possibility for years, have talked about developing a defence strategy, have gathered ample evidence to suggest that the earth has been all but wiped out in the past by such things, but so far, there is not enough common ground or goodwill among men, to unite countries in an effort to pool the resources needed, to give us a fair shot at survival.
To me, the advancement of technology at such a rapid pace, coupled with the lack of cohesion to work for the greater good with all of this wonderful technology, will likely be the thing that causes mankind to be caught with it's pants down, and cost us dearly, sometime down the road. Instead of being ready for a major challenge, we will have to scramble to put a plan together, and I fear that what we come up with will be too little, too late.
People are odd, like that. We get caught up in every day living, look no further than the few inches in front of our feet, and consume ourselves with the petty details required, to get through the challenges of the day. I am just as guilty as the rest in that regard, but I do find the occasional moment to look skyward, and contemplate the bigger picture.
And it is because of this larger picture that I am obsessed with the world economic situation. While America and Europe focus all of their attention on trying to get out of the fiscal mess they have created, they are in no position to look at the bigger picture, and that opportunity falls to nations like China, who do not inspire my confidence in the ability to work for the greater good.
In summary, let's just say that it is not a good time in human terms, for a large piece of space junk to put the challenge upon us, to see if we really have learned anything collectively as a species.
A wounded bird that crashes through your window can cause quite a commotion, but is essentially harmless.
The odd thing is that, we completely agree on all you forsee.
With the exception that we believe God knows, and, as the bible says, if these days were not shortened, by Him, all mankind would perish.

Watching and laughing!!!
Well, what do you know!
"This evening, an asteroid the length of three football fields will buzz by Earth at a rate of 7 miles per second.
The asteroid called 2012 QG42 is about to get its close-up.
A month ago, scientists weren't even aware it existed. But it's now on the radar, and viewers can watch it pass by Earth from the convenience of the Web. No astronomy lessons necessary.
Although tonight's flyby is harmless, the asteroid has been named "potentially hazardous" by the Minor Planet Center. That means it's not dangerous, at least not yet. But it could pose problems in the future."

Scientists didn't have a clue about this, until a month ago. Good thing it isn't headed straight for us, huh? And if it was headed straight for us, would the common man even be warned about it?
This is the kind of thing mankind should be spending our treasure and time dealing with. But instead we get cryptic warnings from startled scientists, who assure us we are not in imminent danger, but it 'could be a problem' in the future.
