    Default Hey ari..

Heading down to Detroit tomorrow for the Leafs/Wings game on Tuesday. Any good places to go to around the Joe Louis, and any to stay away from?

Go to Cobo Joe's before the game. It's not a fancy place, but it is right next to The Joe, and it is usually rockin' an hour or so before game time. There should be lots of Leafs fans there, too.

Then of course there is Hockeytown Cafe, not sure if you've been there before. Lots of cool memorabilia there.

Tomorrow Old Shillelagh's will be crazy, in fact that part of downtown should be, being St. Patrick's Day. Try to stop in there if you can.

Not really any places to avoid in the arena/Greektown area. It's clean and safe. But if you can, take a ride on the People Mover. You've heard of how parts of Detroit are dying, but wait until you see some parts of the city from that perspective, it is pretty shocking. Illitch is doing a good job revitalizing the city, and the new Wings arena in a few years will help a lot, but there is lots of work to do.

I went to a Leafs/Wings pre-season game in September. Of course it was sold out, seeing Leafs fans numbered around 7-8,000. It was an amazing atmosphere for a pre-season game, we had a ton of fun with the Leafs fans. Sat among a large group from Port Stanley, and we had a blast.

Oh, also, if you want a Chicago-style pizza that is absolutely amazing, go to PizzaPapalis in Greektown, you won't regret it. Best pizza I've ever had, bar none

Awesome thanks. We had went to a game a few years ago but were to rushed to go anywhere before or after so we're taking a few days to go this time. We're staying at the Courtyard and the People Mover connects right to it so that's a bonus. Hockey Town Cafe was a sure stop for sure, we'll check out Cobo Joes too.

    Thanks, eh!

I stay at either the Ren Cen or Courtyard, sometimes at the Atheneum in Greektown, if a good deal can be found.

Courtyard is a nice place ,and as you say you can walk to the Mover right from the hotel.

We were going to stay at the Motor City Hotel (stayed there for a Tigers game and loved it) but figured being connected to the Mover would be easier. We stayed at the Ren Center last time, but this time they wanted almost $70 a night more. That's beer drinkin' money!

Yeah, they can get really crazy with their prices at times.

I like the Atheneum because that's where the opposing teams stay. I've met Ron Hextal, Al Arbour, The Sedin twins, Todd Bertuzzi (when he was a Canuck) while there, and even had a few Rolling Rocks with Marc Crawford and Jim Houghson.

Hmm, does the Atheneum have it's own bar/rest?

Yes, nice bar and the restaurant is Fishbones.

Get the alligator bites if you go there.

phew, the Wings win a tight one at the Joe!

With their top-5 centers out and 11 players from last year's Griffins team in the lineup the Wings get a character win.
