    Default The Decline Continues

Last winter, Hockey Canada and Bauer Hockey Inc. commissioned an independent survey to better understand the challenges facing non hockey-playing families.

Thatís because according to the two organizations, approximately 90 per cent of Canadian families choose to not have their kids play hockey.

Despite the popularity of hockey in Canada only 15.7 percent of Canadian boys play the organized sport. Hockey Canada reports they have lost 8,000 players during a one year period from 2009 to 2010. The number would be even greater had the number of female players not been on the increase. Barring some dramatic development, Hockey Canada expects to lose an astounding 30,000 players in its 5 to 25 year-old age group by 2016.

Global warming is preventing a lot of those backyard rinks we used to see. Result?? Less players.

That could a part of the reason, but I believe it to be a small part. Todays youth is much less likely to participate in a physical activity. It would appear their focus is on electronics and hand held devices. I also believe the decline may also be attributed to the cost of playing organized hockey. It's no longer a cheap sport and many homes with a single income have only enough for the necessities.
