NOTE: Canada has not just legalized medical marijuana; Bill C-45 provided for the legalization of recreational marijuana.

One hopes work on some sort of roadside test for drivers is coming to fruition as rapidly as the legislation legalizing the drug. Might be getting the cart before the horse here.

Why? People who smoke will smoke, legal or not.
It's not that everyone will all of a sudden get as high as a kite once it becomes legal.

They may exhibit a lot more abandon with legislation in place legalizing pot and should there be a lack of verifiable testing equipment we could rather easily end up with a spate of accidents involving people who we have no way of policing.

At least I would suspect but with legalization come more users out of the woodwork and that only serves to exacerbate the problem then with no substantive roadside tests available. How does one charge them, it takes one to challenge a blanket law like well they looked, acted, smelled under the influence and we are back at square one.

The ""Government of Canada" (GoC) website indicates that drug-impaired driving has been illegal since 1925.

Also, and I quote, "There are currently more than 13,000 officers trained in Standard Field Sobriety Testing and over 775 Drug Recognition Experts in Canada."

My point? Whether legal or illegal, the means of and need for testing and reinforcement aren't likely to be altered that much by legalization of recreational marijuana.

Also, its worth noting the demographic that drug-impaired driving peaks among young adults. This is happening while it's illegal. It seems to me that young people today are more drawn toward or involved in drugs than "back in the day"; if that's valid, the legal state of use of recreational marijuana is neither a detriment (when illegal) or enabler (when legal) of drug-impaired driving.

My point? Again, whether legal or illegal, there's not likely to be a noticable difference in the number of drug-impaired driving incidents. IMO, it will be other forces at work that will produce the noticeable difference.
