I have always equated extraterrestrials with religion. I see similarities and it tends to explain some of the goings-on.

I see all religion as being rooted in humans trying to answer the questions of life, without scientific knowledge.
As our scientific knowledge expands, our questions shrink.

It's only a matter of time before we will unlock the recipe of life. Once that is done, religious ideas will not hold the values they currently hold.
It will be interesting to see what happens next, once the idea of an afterlife seizes to exist.
