From what I have read in the article...have you thought of washing the fly swatter? It seems that flies have an acute sense of smell, and if it reeks of dead flies, I can't blame them for hiding.

We had a fly in our place for like three days that managed to evade me. Ha! I got the little bugger in the end though.

I like to catch them with my hand, good for eye/hand coordination. Actually it's almost a sport for me, yeah, I know.....but some of us are weird.
