Default I'm over 40 and thinking of getting tubes untied?

Anyone ever done this? I have an appt in Oct with the doctor that tied them and I don't even know if he will untie them? I had then done right after my son was born but now I feel like I'm in a better financial position for another kid and would like to try. I know the risks are high but I know women that have had healthy kids over 40. Unfortunately I have to pay out of pocket for it, does anyone know if a work insurance policy will pay part? Thanks for any info

Wow, good luck to you! My cousin had a baby after 40, she said it was pretty hard...but then again her daughter was a suprise

In any case, I hope you get the help you are looking for! And I wish you many fertile days

What your thinking of doing could end up down the road being something you might be wishing you hadn't of tried. Complications etc., I know someone who attempted the same and it didn't work out well at all.
Think long and hard about this decision because it could really change your life and not necessarily in a good way.

Thanks for the advice. Yeah I know JB there are alot of variables to consider. With age comes more problems, I wish women were like men a 90 year old can still father children but a mid 40 yr old woman they are not only risking their life but the life of the unborn is at risk. Your supposedly most fertile at like 16yrs old! I've had three healthy children, but probably because I'm getting to the point of no more that I feel the need to have another. My husband wanted to adopt but that takes too long and they do a thorough background which he won't look favorable. I figure I will spend the $100 to have the consult then decide what to do.

Wow, I can't even think of having another kid at 40. I'm 28 right now and my three tire me out. I'm looking forward to the grandchildren at 40 (love the thought of playing with them and then sending them home ) All the power to you if you have the energy and good health. Myself, I don't think I would want to be raising a teen in by 50's and worrying about college fees when retirement is around the corner. I love babies myself, would love another one right now, but hubby says we have enough

Studies show that "MEN" over 40 have a higher risk of having a child with austism. So there are risks with men having children at higher ages too... not just women... Good Luck to you though!! I am just about 31.. and am in school for nursing.. and by the time I am done I will be 34..I might have another child then if I still want one!!

as far as i know there are NO insurance policies that will cover a tubal reversal, also, if you decide to have them re-tied, you wont be covered for that either thru ohip.

A good friend of mine had a tubal reversal and reacted to the anesthetic and they almost lost her. She ended up in Intensive Care, and had to foot the entire bill because the surgery is not covered by OHIP.

I personally would talk to a genetic counsellor as well before making that decision. Risk of a chromosome abnormality (Down Syndrome, etc.) is much higher in women over 40. There are many other potential complications as well. The Algoma Public Health genetics department can help you out.

I heard too that its easier to get reversed in the first 5 yrs of getting it done.
I have a 19 and 17 yr old as well and I couldn't even think of them having a kid for me to be a grandmother at 40. I would rather be a new mother at 43 than a grandmother! I didn't know of the risks of men over 40 that's good to know. My husband is 6 months younger than me so he's just 40 now. Its definitely more to think about than just wanting another kid. And do I want another one just because I know I'm getting to the age that I won't be able to have one?

Here is a link to an excellent article on Advanced Maternal Age. It provides some very good information.

I have looked into a tubal ligation reversal and what I found out was that the only thing my insurance at work will cover is medications. They will cover a year's worth of feritlity drugs once the procedure is done.

I would much rather be a new mom at 40 than a grandmother as well... I am 37 now and my oldest child is 17. My mom was the opposite. She said that being a grandmother at 38 was much better than being a new mother at that age!

I have three sons aged 16, 18 and 21. I think I'd die if I were to get pregnant at my age I'm 42.

I can't imagine going through all that again. I love my boys and wouldn't trade them for anything, but to have another No way not this girl.

However - that being said, if this is something that you truly feel the need to do, then by all means go for it. I would however do some serious research before undertaking any kind of reversal.
I was unaware of the furtility drugs that you must take after, that alone would make me say FORGET it.

I have a friend that had 4 kids in *under* 3 years. A boy, followed by a girl 15 months later, followed by twin boys another 20 months later. Her and her husband decided they were done. Five years later, they changed their minds, and she had a reversal. They never did get pregnant again. That might be something else to consider. Just because you spend thousands of dollars for a reversal does not mean you will conceive again. In their case, it worked out for the best, as the husband became seriously ill for many years after, leaving my friend to raise her 4 little ones virtually alone.
I am not merely a mass of molecules, incoherently careening through time and space. I am a child of God, destined for another world, a world before which this one pales in significance. Our spiritual preparation for the next world is to be the priority of this life.

I had a tubal ligation reversal. Mine was successful. I was 39 when I had the surgery, my tubes had been tied for 14 years. I was 41 when I gave birth to my son. While there are risks as you get older The best advice is do alot of research. I had an excellent doctor who explained the pros and the cons on having it done. It is expencive but in my opinion it was well worth it. I have no regrets. And there aren't any guarantees that the surgery will be sucessful. I opted not to have the amnio (sp) testing done. My son is perfect, (typical mom all my kids are perfect) lol.

I had my appt today and the Dr said that it can be done, there's a 50/50 chance of sucess and a 2 percent chance of having a baby with a genetic abnormality. He never mentioned fertility drugs, it will cost about $4000.00. He said they are booking into the new year and I would be off work after the surgery for 3 weeks.
Cracker: Your story is very uplifting! I'm worried about a baby with a genetic problem, about spending the money and never getting pregnant. I have 3 great healthy kids right now I'm not sure I want to risk my life now for another baby? Am I wanting to do this because I know my time is coming up to be able to even consider having one or do I really want another one? Too many guestions not enough answers!

Your doctor has mislead you in terms of genetic risks. EVERY couple, regardless of medical history, previous pregnancy history, age, personal health, etc. has a 3-4% risk of having something wrong with the baby. That is just the underlying general population risk. In addition to this 3-4% general population risk, other factors come in to play depending on general health of the mother, age of the mother, previous pregnancy outcomes, etc. The risk of a chromosomal abnormality (Down Syndrome, Trisomy 18, deletions, duplications, etc) increases with age starting at 35 and becoming higher risk with each subsequent year. The risk of miscarriage and other complications at delivery are higher in women of advanced maternal age as well.

I am not trying to be pessimistic, I am just providing you with factual information so that you can base your decision on sound, medical information.

BTW, I am a health care professional with over 27 years of experience (14 of these years were in the field of genetics and prenatal diagnosis).

Thanks puppy lover, i think I have made up my mind anyway that I'm not going to do it. My husband and I went over the pros and cons and I (we) found there are too many cons to make it worth it. I know he wants another one though I see him watching commercials with babies in it and he owwing and ahhing at them. Strange.
