    UNITED STATES
    • In 1996, 110,640 deaths were attributable to alcohol consumption in the United States. This
figure has not been below 103,247 since 1979.

    • In 1997, unintentional injuries were the leading cause of death among Americans aged 1-34, and
approximately one-third of these deaths were alcohol-related.
    • Those who started drinking before the age of 21 were significantly more likely to suffer an
unintentional injury while under the influence of alcohol sometime in their life than those who
began drinking at or above the age of 21.

    • The risk of trauma death is 2.5 to 8 times higher among alcohol abusers than the general public.
Patients with an alcohol problem are nearly 5 times more likely to die in motor vehicle crashes,
16 times more likely to die in falls, and 10 times more likely to become fire or burn victims.
    • Alcoholism is by far the most common underlying health problem in trauma victims, affecting
25% to 40% of patients, compared with a 2% to 5% incidence for other co-morbidities.

    • More than one-third of Americans report that alcohol has caused trouble in their immediate
family, which is the highest percentage response to this question in the more than 50 years it has
    been asked.

    • An estimated 21.6 million Americans in 2003 were classified with substance dependence or
abuse. This constitutes 9.1% of the total population aged 12 or older.
    • Of these, 3.1 million were classified with dependence on or abuse of both alcohol and illicit
drugs, 3.8 million were dependent on or abused only illicit drugs and 14.8 million were dependent
    on or abused only alcohol.

    • It was estimated that 6,507 Canadians died in 1995 due to alcohol consumption. The largest
number of alcohol-related deaths stemmed from impaired-driving accidents (p. 1,673).

I'm not a math wizard, but which is a bigger number??

    103,247 United States or
    6,507 Canada?

Hmm, you should prob. look on a per capita basis but T-Pot's point stands.

Doesn't matter in this case. Being drunk doesn't matter on a per capita basis. Funding, yeah sure. Being drunk, no.

" Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Canada supporters are very upset at the suggestion of Canada Safety Council President Emile Therien that impaired driving deaths should be tallied in a different manner and considered as either suicides or homicides. In a recent press release dated May 27th (attached), the Safety Council suggests that impaired driving should not be considered the leading criminal cause of death in Canada and the President is quoted reducing the numbers of people dying on our roads with a convoluted formula that would have a differentiation for suicide and homicide.

"I can't figure out what point he is trying to make," says Andrew Murie, National Executive Director. "We have become familiar with Mr. Therien's attempts to minimize the crime of impaired driving, but it is really reprehensible to think he is now trying to minimize those Canadians being killed by impaired driving.""

"During 2005, 16,885 people in the U.S. died in alcohol-related motor vehicle crashes, representing 39% of all traffic-related deaths (NHTSA 2006)."

Speedy cites links, T-Pot doesn't. Mr. Post-Doc himself, Davey boy, goes with the guy who provides no sources (T Pot). Tells you a lot about Dave, Eh?

Percentage of alcohol-related deaths in Canada.: 0.006%

    Percentage of alcohol-related deaths in U.S.: 0.005%

Percentage of "problem drinkers" (11 to 21 drinking days in 30-day period) in Canada: 14%

    Speedy,

    1.- That's Dr post-doc to you. LOL.
2.- I thought you were going, face it you are addicted to us, you have taken T-Pots bait. Speedy loses AGAIN! Ha ha ha.
3.- I didn't support anyone. I merely pointed out that per capita would be better and if you convert T-Pots statistic to per capita then the US figure is still higher.

    T-Pot,

Of course per capita or %age is better. Think, if 40 million Americans are alcholics that would be a fraction of their population, if 30 million Canadians were alcoholics that would be ALL of you. Which would reflect worse? The American figure is higher. Come now, play fair.

Dave, he said ALL the drunks are in Canada. Not a percentage of drunks.

There are more drunks in the States. So how does per capita matter, when it is the total number of drunks.

Well ,there is an American myth that Canadians can walk and chew gum at the same time.

My year on Soonet has shown me that is an outright myth of monstrous proportions!
