Default yes I want my Canada Back.

I do agree with this letter to the editor for the simple reason, that I came from Europe in 1953,landed here in the Soo with $48.00 in my pocket which the Government had given me.
From there on I was on my own.
And I made it on my own.Married here had 3 kids, worked hard, became a Canadian, gave up my other Nationality, and now Me and all my family are CANADIAN.
That`s the way it should be, This Dual citizenship is an easy way out.I figure in another 20 years,Canadians will be a Minority.

This reminds me of the current squabble in the news about a young girl who was barred from entering a judo competition because she refused to take off her hijab. "This is discrimination against our religion", cries the Father.

"No, this is a safety issue", cry the officials.

And the many voices chime in from across the country on radio talk shows everywhere, with opinions that range from "let them go back home!" to the aforementioned, "it's discrimination!"

I was raised religiously. Even back in the late '50's, there were times when my faith (or I should say the faith of my father) collided against the current of our culture. What did we do?

We did something that Muslims and others who try to change cultural policies by intimidation and even in some countries, by violence, should learn.

You count the cost, and you pay the price. That's what makes a faith genuine. What do I mean?

When I was a kid, I was not allowed to go to dances. Dancing was a part of our phys ed curriculum. My father believed that dancing was too intimate an activity for young boys, and so I would go to class with a note, saying that I was to be excused from dancing, due to our religious convictions. (Personally, I was relieved, but for all the wrong reasons. I was far too shy to do the rumba or the fox trot anyway!)

But I learned as a young man from various situations like the above one that if your faith is going to mean anything, you do not try to make the world conform to you by making demands on society, or even drawing a lot of attention to yourself. You take it on the chin, dust yourself off, and learn through these 'hard' times what your true values are.

Should we be accommodating to the customs of people of other religions? As far as they do not compromise public safety, why not? If RCMP Sikhs want to wear turbans and it doesn't compromise anything of significance, I say that tolerance ought to be afforded. But where health and safety are concerned, or your custom causes an imposition on society, do what the rest of us do. Take it on the chin, count the cost and be proud that you are a live fish who knows how to swim against the stream. Don't complain that the current isn't changing direction just to make life easier for you.

It's bucking the current that helps you to discover your spiritual muscles. And the unimportant stuff fades away.
    ____
P.S. I still don't dance, but not for religious reasons!

Has to be one of the most boring letters i have ever read.

Immigrants coming over to Canada today should be sent back to their home as there is hundreds of Canadians here that need jobs first.

There's nothing preventing Canadians to apply for those same jobs as the immigrants are getting.

Only thing I didn't agree with is the the RCMP with the Turbans. The RCMP had a standard uniform for the longest time now, to cry discrimination for that is ridiculous.

Next you will have a little east indian boy joining the boy scouts, crying he can't wear his turban instead of the beanie.

And when they play hockey, to change skates to camel toes!

Ayedeloof, knock off the parrot lessons!!

Just wondering about those immigrants that came over 50/100 years ago to become tradesmen.
What did they do in their home countries? Were they bricklayers and labourers back there?? Or were they the same as today, doctors, lawyers professional people barred from work by the establishment??

I think you are missing the point (how I interperated it anyways)
the way imigrants acted back then as opposed to now... back then they considered it a privelidge and treated it as so... now a-days they seem to act like they are entitled to it and we ought to conform to them.
I like the letter, I wish more imigrants looked at life in Canada as sooboy33 does.

On one hand, most of the immigrants that came in the wave that my family was a part of were anglos, with a judeo-Christian base, so the cultural clash was not as strong.

On the other hand, on a more personal note, I remember coming home from school and asked my Dad what a Nazi was, because thats what the kids were calling me. Imagine that. Me, a German kid, did not know what a Nazi was.

We also grew up without a TV, and were not allowed to read comics or chew bubblegum.. that was viewed as part of western degradation. We weren't even allowed to read the comics in the newspaper!

Immigrants that didn't have a trade (like my Dad) were given the really tough stuff.. He dug sewers for a living for the first few years.
